On December 5, 2005, the Vermont International
Education Initiative (housed in the Asian Studies
Outreach Program at the University of Vermont) held
their first statewide international education summit.
The summit was attended by 70 policymakers, as well
as leaders of business, education, professional
organizations, and parents. Since December, Juefei
Wang, Director, Asian Studies Outreach Program and
leader of the initiative, has published an Op-Ed in the
Burlington Free-Press. The paper has also written two
follow-up stories.
Progress on other key issues has followed on the
success of the summit. The State Board of Education
has decided to develop a long-term plan for
implementation of the K-12 expectations for Modern and
Classical (non-native) Languages within the Vermont
Framework of Standards. A bill has also been introduced
into the State Legislature to institute an international
education curriculum. The Senate Education Committee
has begun holding hearings on the bill.

| National Governors Association Focuses on International Education |
 |
|
The nation's Governors gathered in Washington, D.C. for
their annual Winter Meeting from February 25-28. The
committee of Education, Early Childhood and Workforce
met on February 27 to discuss international education.
They heard from a panel of experts including Asia
Society's Vice President for Education Vivien Stewart,
Goldman Sachs Foundation President Stephanie Bell-
Rose, and Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings
who discussed the President's National Security
Language Initiative.
Governors are examining the benefits of having a
workforce of students prepared for the 21st century
who speak other languages and understand and
appreciate other cultures. Minnesota Governor Tim
Pawlenty, chair of the committee stated, "We live in a
changing world, with changing technology, changing
culture, and changing economies...(U.S. citizens need)
to better understand language, culture, and foster
relationships; and of course a big part of that is having
an educational system that is aware of those
trends...we need to prepare our education curriculum. I
look forward to having a conversation with my fellow
governors about actions we can take to ensure our
students are ready for the challenges of the future."
