Spotlight: Student Projects in International Education
They tackle tough topics in every issue. From global
warming and genocide in Darfur to war in Iraq and
Lebanon, it's a tricky charge, but these students are
game. Since fall 2005, 15 students have come
together to produce International Insider, the
high school newspaper of College of Staten Island
High School for International Studies (CSI), a member
of Asia Society's International Studies Schools
Network. A collaboration with student reporters around
the globe using an internet blog and email
correspondence, the publication delivers real
international experience to students every month.
Started shortly after the school opened, the
Insider is the result of the passion and efforts of
Aimee Horowitz, CSI's principal, and Nancy Kaplan,
the publication's faculty advisor. "It broadens our
students' horizons by having them connect and share
opinions with students from many countries
throughout the world," said Horowitz. "This helps them
to develop tolerance, understanding and appreciation
of diverse perspectives and different cultures."

International Benchmarking
As more states focus on reforming schools to meet
the challenges of global competition, there are
increasing discussions on benchmarking schools to
schools in other countries. The Florida legislature is
voting on a plan to overhaul their education standards,
with help from experts around the world. The new
standards will be called "World Class Standards,"
and the proposed changes include adding social
studies to the Florida Comprehensive Assessment
Test (FCAT) and including world language instruction
in elementary schools.
Ohio has taken the idea of international benchmarking
even further, inviting Achieve, Inc. to complete an
in-depth survey and report on the state of Ohio's
education system in comparision to the best
education systems in the world. At the Ohio
International Education Summit held last month in
Columbus, Sir Michael Barber, one of the authors of
the report, presented the main findings, making seven
recommendations for Ohio's education system and
elaborated on each by sharing examples of best
practices used in other systems around the world to
tackle similar problems.
