| State Spotlight: Wisconsin and Ohio |

Superintendent of Public Instruction Elizabeth
Burmaster's proposed budget for 2007-2009 in
Wisconsin PK-12 schools, prominently features global
literacy and competititveness. Recognizing that children
in other countries learn two or three languages before
finishing high school, giving them an edge in the global
marketplace, Superintendent Burmaster's budget lays
out a bold plan to provide funding for elementary world
language instruction. Additionally, it will provide
competitive seed grants for STEM courses -- advanced
science, technology, engineering, and mathematics --
to address achievement and participation gaps in those
subjects and support economic development in
Wisconsin. For more information:

Ohio is also focusing on STEM and international
education initiatives through the proposed Ohio Core
legislation. If passed, Ohio Core would require all high
school students to take four years of math, science
and English; three years of social studies and two years
of a foreign language. Students would also be provided
with the opportunity to earn at least one semester of
college credit during high school.
A new International Education Advisory Committee,
which includes leaders from Ohio companies, Board of
Regents, K-12 Superintendents, higher education
leaders and foundation directors has been formed to
examine international education in the state. The Ohio
Department of Education is also co-sponsoring a
conference for school leaders on December 14 to help
school districts initiate or expand on programs in
Chinese.

| Apple's Globally Aware program |
 |
|
Today's students need to master a complex set of skills
to succeed in work, school and life in the 21st century.
One of those skills is global awareness. But what does
this mean? Is it enough for students to simply
be "aware" of other parts of the world? Apple
Distinguished Educators began a project this past
summer to develop curriculum and experiences for
teachers and students to examine what it means to
be "Globally Aware." These resources are now available
on the Apple Learning Interchange website (click the
link below).
As a part of this project the Apple Learning Interchange
is reaching out to organizations to gain insight in this
field. Listen to a podcast interview with Ms. Vivien
Stewart, Vice President of Education, and Dr. Michael
Levine, Vice President of New Media at the Asia
Society, as they explore the need for global awareness
programs in schools and tips and strategies on how to
get started.
