2007 McGraw Prizes Awarded to Visionaries in International Education
The 2007 Harold W. McGraw, Jr. Prize in Education
honors three innovators who are educating U.S.
students for a global age. Lois B. DeFleur,
President, Binghamton University; Reynauld
Smith, Social Studies and Advanced Placement (AP)
American History teacher, Eastern High School,
Washington, D.C.; and Vivien Stewart, Vice President,
Education, Asia Society, were honored at a
black-tie dinner on September 25, 2007 at the New
York Public Library. Each winner received an award of
$25,000 and a bronze sculpture.
"The world has changed dramatically since the
creation 20 years ago of the Harold W. McGraw, Jr.
Prize in Education," said Harold McGraw III, Chairman,
President and Chief Executive Officer of The McGraw-
Hill Companies. "The success of our students and the
competitiveness of our nation are dependent upon
new and creative thinking by educators. Today's
students must acquire broader knowledge and
deeper understanding of our interdependent world."

The College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007
was passed by Congress and signed into law
by President Bush in late September. The purpose is
to make college more affordable for low-income
students by increasing Pell grants. It would
provide student loan forgiveness to borrowers who
serve in areas of national need including foreign
language specialists, early childhood education,
and certain highly qualified teachers. It would also
establish a TEACH grant program providing tuition
assistance to undergraduate and graduate students
who commit to teaching a high-need subject in a
high-need school for four years.
