Deans of Education Focus on International Education
The Council of Academic Deans from Research
Education Institutions (CADREI), an assembly of
deans of education from research and land grant
institutions throughout North America, turned its
attention to international education during its
Annual Meeting in October. The Deans agreed that it
was urgent to prepare teachers to help students
develop international knowledge and skills.
Recommended curriculum adaptations include
requiring international courses as part of future
teachers' general education, integrating global content
into required education courses, and offering field
experiences in internationally themed schools and
classrooms, especially those in multi-cultural
communities in the United States. Finally, schools of
education were strongly encouraged to help
pre-service teachers study or complete practice
teaching in other countries.
Resources to support these strategies include the
Longview
Foundation's program on internationalizing
teacher preparation, and the Department of Education
International Programs Services. For
more information on the conference click below.
Grantmakers for Education, a national network of over
200 foundations, corporate giving programs, and
individual donors, also used its annual meeting to
explore possibilities in international education. Their
2007 conference examined the question - "How can
we help transform an outmoded 19th century
education system into one that prepares all students -
especially those who are most disenfranchised - to
thrive as global citizens?" Large and small
foundations heard presentations on models and
initiatives in the field and were encouraged to consider
how international education could fit into their strategic
priorities.
Undergraduate International Studies and Foreign
Language Program provides grants to strengthen
and improve undergraduate instruction in international
studies and foreign languages. Extra points will be
awarded to those projects that focus on foreign
languages, especially critical needs languages.
Projects that provide in-service training for K-12
teachers in foreign languages and international
studies are of particular interest. Deadline: November
26. For more information click here.
