Tiger Woods: 3 Things We Learned About Tiger at the 2012 US Open

Published: June 20, 2012

After a couple days to ponder exactly what happened to Tiger Woods over the weekend at the 2012 US Open, I’m still struggling to get a handle on the moment. It looked like Tiger’s tournament to do with as he pleased after opening rounds of 69 and 70 found him very comfortably tied for the lead at one-under par. He was hitting a lot of fairways and greens—not exactly like the “old” Tiger, mind you, but certainly well enough to win if he kept it going. His scores were solid, especially for a US Open. But they weren’t entirely reflective of how good he was playing...

Now that the group stage of the 2012 Euro Cup is over, here’s a quick look into what are sure to be hotly contested matches in the quarterfinals.  Czech Republic vs. Portugal Both of these squads started off the cup with a loss, yet both came through when it mattered most to pull out victories in their final group game to send them to the quarterfinals. After being drubbed 4-1 by Russia in their opener, the Czechs defeated Greece and Poland in must-win games to win their group. Meanwhile, Portugal scored three minutes from the match’s end to win a 3-2 thriller over Denmark,...

Wings Clipped: Rafa Nadal Finally Gets His Win over Novak Djokovic

The 2012 Monte Carlo Masters final (which I have seen four times now) was a somber affair and a disappointment to those of us who were looking for a dog fight. Novak Djokovic showed up for a set and two games with his relatively impaired form (compared to 2011), after which he decided to check out every so often. This was a tough match to take apart and draw conclusions from, as Rafa Nadal cruised to a 6-3, 6-1win in just 78 minutes for his record 20th Masters title. There’s mental strength, and then there’s mental strength against Nadal. The second one is a whole different...

Bubba Golf Plus Bubba Gump Shrimp Equals an All Time Classic

We learned a valuable less in Augusta, Ga.  Golf is not archery. Golf is a game of angles, obstacles, and last week it was reduced to a pink driver and a 53-degree hook shot that spun the game on its axis.   There was a movie in the mid 1990s that sent the world stammering for words.  The movie was Forest Gump.  And, it reminded us that the ‘ordinary man’ is sometimes extraordinary.  Bubba Watson has the world of golf in an identity crisis in the same way that movie made us consider the capabilities of the common man. “Bubba: Anyway, like I was sayin’,...

Only one tournament remains on the ATP calendar: the Barclay’s ATP World Tour Finals. The event kicks off in London on Sunday. This prestigious tournament features the top eight ranked players in the world battling in round-robin format. The event concludes with semifinal and championship matches.  This year’s participants are: Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, Roger Federer, David Ferrer, Jo-Wilfired Tsonga, Tomas Berdych and Mardy Fish. Fish will be the only newcomer at the event; Federer and Djokovic are former world tour finals champions.  I will break down the...

Rugby World Cup: What the Wallabies Must Do to Beat the Springboks in Wellington

After coming to New Zealand on optimistic terms after winning their first Tri Nations title in 10 years, the Australian World Cup squad now faces the somewhat inglorious prospect of a quarterfinal elimination against the Springboks. Things weren’t helped by the announcement that Bryce Lawrence would be officiating the match. With things looking decidedly bleak for the men in gold, I thought I’d put myself in Robbie Deans’ official-looking tracksuit for a day and look at what the Wallabies will have to do to pull off a seemingly unlikely victory.   South Africa’s game...

Every four years, UEFA hosts the European Football Championships — a prestigious international soccer championship that is considered by many to be second only to the World Cup Finals. The tournament pits European national teams against one another, all vying to earn their chance to call themselves the best club on the continent. The format works like this — 51 national clubs from Europe are randomly drawn together into nine groups. Teams play home and away matches against everyone in their group and the group winners, as well as the second-place team with the best record, move...

Assessing the Six Nations Teams Challenge for the 2011 Rugby World Cup

With the squads for the 2011 Rugby World Cup now announced, the tournament is nearly upon us. As with most of the previous World Cups, New Zealand is the clear favorite to claim the William Webb Ellis trophy. Their Tri-Nations rivals South Africa and Australia follow behind. What of the Northern Hemisphere team’s chances? Given their record against the Tri-Nations teams in recent internationals, you’d be hard pressed to make a case for any of them to win the tournament. However past World Cups have shown us that upsets are possible and the Six Nations sides have plenty of quality players...

5 Players to Watch This Week

The PGA Tour makes its annual pilgrimage to White Sulphur Springs West Virginia at one of the most picturesque stops all year – The Greenbrier Classic. The Old White TPC course is the easiest of the 14 par 70 courses the Tour plays on its schedule. So you can look for low scores this week which will be a stark contrast to what we witnessed last week north of the border in the Canadian Open. Defending champion Stuart Appleby will look to right the ship and give a better showing than he has most of the 2011 season. With only eight cuts made in 20 events this season, Appleby does not look like...

Juan Martin Del Potro and Nikolay Davydenko Send Warnings

Who profit from the clay court king absence last week? No big headline when we learn that Novak Djokovic has claimed his fifth title of the season at his Belgrade home tournament, improving to a 27-0 start on the season. Nobody in the draw could have troubled the World No. 2 and it was almost a done deal before the tournament started. However, victories from Juan Martin Del Potro and Nikolay Davydenko are worth taking the time to analyse. The Argentine won in Estoril after crushing Fernando Verdasco 6-2, 6-2, while the Russian renewed with success in Munich defeating local favorite Florian Mayer...
