NEW REPORT
Expanding Chinese Language Capacity in the United States
| download
What would it take to have five percent of American high school students learning Chinese by 2015? A new report recommends national commitment and investments in teaching Chinese language and culture. Created by Asia Society, the report documents a growing consensus among national security and business leaders, educators and foreign language experts. Its analysis of the current status of Chinese language instruction concludes that the current infrastructure to support recruitment of students and teachers as well as the growth of high quality programs is woefully inadequate. The study suggests short- and long-range strategies.

Increasingly leaders across public and private sectors are recognizing the rise of Asia as one of the central facts of the twenty-first century. China, with its tremendous economic growth and emergence as a social and political leader in the region, is fundamental to this shift. The following programs and resources represent beginning efforts in the American educational system that promote greater US-China understanding and communications.

MATH AND SCIENCE
US-China Education Leaders Forums
On July 10-12, 2005 Asia Society and the Chinese Ministry of Education convened the first US-China Education Leaders Forum on Math and Science Education.  The meeting featured top math and science education leaders from both countries and laid the groundwork for future collaboration to improve math and science education in both countries. To learn more about this meeting, click here.

Follow-up meetings and similar high-level forums on other critical aspects of each country’s education systems (for example, early childhood education) are in the works.

State-Province Relations
Building state-province relationships through high-level delegations and exchange

In September 2003, Asia Society organized a high-level delegation of U.S. education leaders to visit China at the invitation of the Ministry of Education.  Through school visits, discussions with students and educators, and meetings with senior officials of the Ministry of Education, the delegates began to establish education partnerships between U.S. states and Chinese provinces.

In September 2005, in collaboration with the Council of Chief State School Officers, Asia Society will lead a second delegation to China, comprised primarily of chief state school officers and leaders of national education organizations.

Starting a Chinese Language Program at School
In order to provide practical advice on how to establish a high-quality Chinese language program to educators, school administrators, parents and community leaders, Asia Society is working on a how-to guide, slated for a Spring 2006 release.  The handbook will be based on the advice and feedback of experienced Chinese-language educators and foreign language experts from around the country and is funded by The College Board.  More information on this publication will be available in the Fall.
