  What are the goals?

The goal is to ensure all American students have the opportunities to learn about world cultures, current affairs, history and languages for their own futures and to help the United States remain a leader in the knowledge economy of the 21st Century.

No one teacher, school, nor can the education system do it alone. Our nation needs to expand investments in international education by building needed connections among schools, higher education institutions, policy and business leaders, the media, community organizations and parents to ensure systemic change.

This initiative's goals are to:

  • Raise awareness of the importance of the international education;
  • Mobilize political, corporate, and educational leadership to create policy priority and demand for education about other world regions; and
  • Stimulate educational institutions, government agencies and others to increase the supply of education about other world regions.

A fundamental strategy is to build on the interests of governors, and international relations and corporate leaders, who realize the centrality of international knowledge and skills to America's future, and to link them to education leaders in order to increase the policy priority given to education about other world regions, cultures and languages.

At the same time, policy change often has limited impact on classrooms unless teachers and schools are involved. Therefore a focus on creating opportunities for teachers, models, and practical resources for schools is a critical element of our work.
