Asia
Society's goal is to collaborate in the development of schools that
promote high level learning for every student through management and
learning strategies consistent with the best available scientific research
and practical wisdom, and through the integration of international content
and perspectives across the curriculum. While leaving substantial opportunity
for local adaptation, the core principles of learning for Asia Society
sponsored schools are:
Curriculum,
instruction and assessment
School
size and organization
Collaborative
governance and decision making
Professional
development
Community
partnerships
Curriculum,
Instruction and Assessment
- An
expectation that students will study one or more world languages throughout
their secondary school career
- Integration
of international content and themes across the curriculum, with a
strong emphasis on language and literacy development
- The
opportunity through course work and individual research for students
to develop deep expertise in at least one world culture or region
- A
standards-based curriculum accessible to all students with the expectation
that every student in every class will master the course content
- Rigorous,
concept-based, inquiry-oriented instructional strategies that enable
students to learn with understanding and to apply knowledge thoughtfully
- Use
of cutting-edge technology to support instruction and language studies
- Opportunities
for students to demonstrate learning and understanding through their
performance on complex, authentic tasks and various benchmarks of
success
School
Size and Organization
-
School size not to exceed 100 students per grade level
- Classroom
and school organizational structures such as teams, student advisories
and looping that promote strong, supportive relationships between
students and teachers and among students
-
Heterogeneous grouping of students for instruction except for specific
courses designed to accelerate learning for struggling students (e.g.
a 9th grade "literacy block" designed to rapidly accelerate low performing
students' literacy skills so that they gain access to the full curriculum),
or self-paced language instruction
Collaborative Governance and Decision Making
- Structures
and procedures that ensure data-based, school-wide collaborative decision
making on important school policy, staffing and budgetary issues
- Opportunity
and authority for the school principal and staff to make decisions
concerning selection and retention of new staff members; the use of
all or nearly all of the school's annual budget; course schedules
and use of instructional time
Professional
Development
-
Regular and substantial periods of time (e.g. daily common planning
time) for teachers' collaborative planning and learning
- Opportunities
for faculty members to receive "outside" coaching to support their
professional development
- Attendance
of faculty members at summer institutes and other professional development
and peer learning opportunities provided by Asia Society
Community
Partnerships
- Alliances,
joint programming, internship and community service opportunities
with businesses, universities, world affairs and cultural institutions
that have connections to international resources
