The States Institute on International Education in the Schools was an annual conference held in 2002-2005 that brought together high-level delegates from two dozen states as well as national leaders in policy, business, education and philanthropy to address a significant problem in American education: the wide gap between the growing economic and strategic importance of Asia and other world regions to the United States, and US students' limited knowledge about the world outside our borders.

In November 2003, Asia Society,
National Governors Association, Council of Chief State School Officers, Education Commission of the States, National Conference of State Legislatures, National Association of State Boards of Education, and National Coalition on Asia and International Studies in the Schools co-sponsored the second States Institute. Governors and chief state school officers are assembling new state leaderships teams that again included senior policymakers from the executive and legislative branches, international studies experts, and outstanding teachers and education leaders. Other Institute participants included experts on trade, national security, foreign languages, and representatives from co-sponsoring organizations.

The inaugural Goldman Sachs Prizes for Excellence in International Education were presented at a special awards dinner at the Institute. U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige presented prizes in five categories to programs across the nation that exemplified how to support international education in schools.

In November 2002, Asia Society, Council of Chief State School Officers, Education Commission of the States and National Governors Association co-hosted the first annual States Institute on International Education in the Schools. This landmark event brought together delegations from 22 states, as well as national leaders in policy, business, education, and philanthropy, to address international education in our schools.

The delegations used a planning guide to help them assess the current status of international education in their state. At the end of the three-day Institute, each state team created an action plan geared to strengthening international education. The delegations recognized the necessity for immediate action, and expressed enthusiasm for and commitment to addressing this urgent need in their respective states.
