Is Rory McIlroy Ready to Take Tiger Woods’ Mantle After Wentworth Win?

The comeback was even more surprising considering the Northern Irishman called off his engagement to tennis star Caroline Wozniacki the day before the start of the tournament.
As a former world No. 1, the 25-year-old has represented Europe, Great Britain and Ireland within the European and PGA Tours. Now, as a European professional, the young athlete has more than a fighting chance to battle Tiger Woods in the world’s spotlight for golf’s leading man.
Tiger Woods, 38 and injury-prone, may seem like old news when compared to the new young guns of golf, like McIlroy and Australian Adam Scott. Despite having been named the second-most marketable athlete in the world by SportsPro (via SB Nation), and signing an enormous endorsement deal with Nike which was great for his Facebook marketing campaign, McIlroy may be able to take the current spotlight from the aging Woods, but he is still only treading water in the ocean that is Tiger’s legacy.
“The game is waiting for one guy to kick on,” McIlroy said in regard to the precision sport’s top spot. “I’d like to be that guy. I’d like to think that this is a springboard to doing something like that. It’s the start of something. I could feel my game bubbling and getting there and a win validates that.”
At Wentworth, McIlroy shot an amazing six-under par the final round, finishing with an even more impressive 14-under par for the win over Shane Lowry by a single shot. Denmark’s Thomas Bjorn felt defeat shooting a seven on the sixth, despite scoring birdies on the 16th and 17th holes, and the champion came home with five birdies, including a pair on the 17th and 18th holes (both par fives) for the win.
