The sport of golf barely has an offseason. Sure, the PGA Tour concludes, but other major worldwide events occur into December. The holiday season is really the only offseason for the sport. However, golf has a great holiday gift for all of its fans this year. The 2012 PGA Tour schedule looks as appealing as it can get. The last four US Open host courses will all be visited by non-major tournaments. The FedEx Cup brings two former major venues to its rotation. The course considered to be the hardest in the country is hosting the PGA Championship. One...

Belly & Long Putter The USGA and the R&A are both researching the Belly Putter issue. Should it be legal to anchor the putter handle against a player’s body? In the past, Sam Snead was banned from standing directly behind the ball and putting much like a croquet strike. In the 1980s, the USGA banned the use of square grooves and set off a firestorm of media coverage and lawsuits from club manufacturers. I’m not too sure they want to do that all again. How can the ruling bodies of golf tackle this issue and appease everyone from the professional to the average golfer, as...

“It’s a walk-off,” utters Billy Zane in the movie Zoolander, just after model-morons Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson commit to competing in the most epic of model battles—on the runway. The scene was about a young-gun versus a veteran, new methods against proven strategies, and most of all, the uncertainty and intrigue of the challenge. Who knew that this one scene from Zoolander would be a (near) reflection of what’s to come in the 2012 golf season? Perhaps that’s a bit of a stretch. But, that same sense of intrigue—whether or not Tiger Woods can reassert...

Golf writer Andy Reistetter continues his exclusive "Play-Write" series with an extended visit to the recently renovated La Costa Resort & Spa in Southern California. As part of a Special Media Preview, Reistetter met with architects Damian Pascuzzo, Jeff Brauer and Champions Tour Player Design Consultant Steve Pate, learned the history of La Costa and the inside story of the recent golf course renovations. Tiger Woods’ victory at the Chevron World Challenge a few weeks ago has people chattering about the 14-time Major winner. And for the first time since November of 2009, it is about his game on the green. Woods ended a frustrating victory drought of more than two years when he overcame a one shot deficit with two holes to play, shooting a final round three-under par 69 at the Sherwood Country Club to defeat fellow American Zach Johnson, and claim the 95th tournament win of his career. The win marked the first for Woods since the 2009 Australian Masters. With his life...

Tiger Woods' peers on the PGA Tour, the golf world's media and guys literally all over the world are once again fawning over Tiger. His win at the Chevron World Challenge and participation in the President's Cup appeared to make it OK for the world to like him again. This woman and probably millions more like me are saying "Hold it there, buster." After two years adrift in a sea of mediocre golf performances and, we speculate, morally adrift, you can't win our hearts back by winning one tournament. Not when you come off as a very unpleasant fellow. We are universally weary...

Remember when Sunday's were an event in golf? That decade or so span when the last day of the weekend meant wearing red? When fans of the sport and those who'd usually skip the channel would tune in and stare, captivated alike at what was transpiring on the greens and fairways at Augusta, Pebble, St. Andrews and TPC? That was the power of Tiger Woods in his prime. He drew all of us in. We couldn't not watch, the gravitational pull of his game and demeanor pulling us toward our couches. No one athlete had more command over his sport, which has been proven quite succinctly with his downturn. What...

The 2011 golf season is winding down. Luke Donald has all the cash, Tiger Woods got back to the winners circle, Yani dominated the LPGA and Greg Norman lost another Presidents Cup. There were, however, a few items of golf business left to attend to before Santa comes to town. Lee Westwood joined a stellar field on the Asian Tour for the inaugural Thailand Golf Championship played on the 7,453-yard Amata Spring Country Club. Westwood fired a career low 12-under-par 60 in the opening round on Thursday and never looked back. He followed up his outstanding first round with 64-73-69 = 266...

The expectations for Tiger Woods are unlike those for any other golfer. After his first tournament victory in over two years, oddsmakers have erected Woods as the 11/2 favorite to win the Masters. Before his recent struggles, no one would have batted an eye at Tiger being the favorite—it was common place. Tiger's dominance had so distorted the way we view success in the sport, we were shocked and disappointed when he didn't win.Casual fans really didn't get it. Tiger would play three tournaments in a row, finish in the top three in each and fans would wonder aloud, "I wonder what's wrong with...

Few times in history has any pro athlete done the Three Stooges slap to the American flag and Bob Dylan like John Daly did in Thailand this week. Despite your suspicions, Daly was in Thailand on business. He was attending the Thailand Golf Championship when he decided to pull out the jacket and belt out the tunes. Bad idea. Only in another country would you not be heckled for the American flag suit jacket, but I thought there had to be someone there who wouldn’t stand for that travesty. The only clothes that should adorn the American flag should be the clothes that Lady Liberty wears in the...
