After a strong week of practice, the USA Sevens team has been named for the next leg of the IRB Sevens World Series. The squad heads off to Adelaide, Australia for the first tournament (March 19-21), and will then compete in the world famous Hong Kong Sevens (March 26-28). Head Coach Al Caravelli has whittled down a group of nineteen players into twelve. The most important factor being that the team is reaching new heights in terms of consistency in their lineup. After playing years with a seemingly revolving lineup at each leg of the IRB Series, Caravelli and USA fans are excited...

With a couple weeks remaining before the next round of the IRB Sevens World Series takes place in Adelaide, Australia, the USA Sevens team begins their preparation. A group of 19 hopefuls are training at the US Olympic training center in Chula Vista, CA to jockey for the 12 open slots on the team. Making a surprise return to the squad is Paul Emerick, who has been granted extra time off from his professional team in Italy. If one didn't know any better, they'd think that Emerick prefers life on the sevens circuit. One thing that is certain is that Emerick has never been shy to profess...

The fourth week of the Super 14 saw the Bulls remain top of the log with a game in hand! Both the Lions and Sharks produced important results in denying their Australian opposition bonus points, which will have a telling effect at the end of the season. Meanwhile in South Africa, the Stormers showed they are still a semi-final prospect, whilst the Cheetahs helped them out by beating the Hurricanes. The Reds produced the upset of the round, although the Chiefs will be highly disappointed with their efforts. The Chiefs negated their good work on the road by dropping a home game, showing that once...

Ok, so it has taken me four weeks to watch my first Super 14 game of the season and judging by what I saw I am very glad I did not watch the first three. Well that is not quite fair. I have been watching the highlights on Super Sport Blitz and it's no surprise that the Blue Bulls are playing fantastic rugby, scoring tries, and playing an expansive game. Even the supposedly kicking fly half, going by the name of Morne Steyn, has scored three tries this season—in fact he has scored more points than what the Sharks have scored. Well, given the state of the way that my beloved Sharks...

We are now four weeks into the Super 14 Rugby Tournament, and the competition is slowly starting to sort itself out. This week, the big stories were the upset wins by the Reds, who beat the Chiefs, and the Cheetahs, who defeated the Hurricanes. Each of the winning teams came in as heavy underdogs and delivered inspiring performances. The weekend was good for three Australian teams in action, as each delivered a win. The Waratahs returned home from winning an exciting game in Sydney, the Brumbies defeated the Lions in their first home game of the year, and the Reds delivered a shocking win over...

On the back of the Olympic announcement and the highly successful Las Vegas Sevens event, rugby has made yet another huge leap in the United States. American International Media, owners of the USA Sevens Tournament and Rugby Magazine, are set to launch the first ever Collegiate Sevens Championship in conjunction with USA Rugby and NBC. NBC will broadcast live from the tournament, which takes place June 5-6 at Columbus Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio. The broadcast marks collegiate rugby’s debut on network television. For fans of collegiate rugby, this may be a bit of a bittersweet pill....

It is still too early to tell if the Irish will be able to successfully defend their Six Nations title. Two things are certain: there will be no Grand Slam, and they will need to rely on Italy or England to beat France if they are to win their 19th title (11 outright wins, 8 shared victories).  Ireland’s 33-10 loss to France at Croke Park was a vicious reality check for the current champions, who had been undefeated for 12 matches before the slaughter in Paris.  The men from the Emerald Isle were always going to face a massive challenge taking on Les Bleus in Paris, a partisan rugby venue...

In 2010, there will be usual interest in various tours, who wins the Six Nations and Tri Nations, and whether potentially the All Blacks and Springboks can achieve a touring Grand Slam. Â But beyond it all will be how the big nations build towards a crucial World Cup countdown. Â Naturally, it is too far out even to begin to accurately predict who will be at Eden Park when the final is played out amidst tremendous expectation. Â Most interest will focus on the All Blacks, playing a World Cup on home soil for the first time in 24 years, when they also won their first and only William Webb Ellis...

The third week of the Super 14 saw every New Zealand side win, and only one each for the Aussies and South Africans! Let's hope it is not a sign of things to come, but not much has changed from what we usually see. The Kiwis dominated their overseas competition, and all picked up bonus points. Meanwhile, the Aussies and South Africans were each bad at home and away from home. The Bulls showed they are worthy defending champions and won't give up their crown easily, whilst the Stormers for all their promise failed once again at home in front of a large crowd. Every year they lose when they...

We are now three weeks into the 2010 Super 14 season, and the competition still looks like it is going to be closely contested. It was a good weekend for New Zealand, as all five of their teams won. We also saw the Bulls come from behind to beat the Waratahs in a thrilling finish, while the Brumbies sneaked home against the Stormers. The most obvious thing we can see so far is that there will be no easy games in this competition. Any team is seemingly capable of beating any other team, or at least capable of pushing them right to the limit. We have only three unbeaten teams left in the competition,...
