It’s not just the grid that's changing for F1 in 2012, broadcasting is taking a drastic turn when the season returns in March. BBC and Sky have agreed to share the rights of F1 coverage and after much speculation both parties have now released their plans for what is set to be an exciting year on and off the track. I am not going to dwell on how as a viewer myself, with shared broadcasting I believe we are set to loose what has been up until now, the greatest free to air coverage of Formula One that Britain has ever seen. Yet instead what I wish to highlight is what, as the audience, we might...

With only two first team seats remaining for 2012, there are a barrage of current drivers still left without a drive. Jaime Alguersuari, Sebastien Buemi, Vitaly Petrov, Bruno Senna and Adrian Sutil have been left discarded by their teams. Every one of them has been replaced in favour of a rookie driver or someone starting or returning for a first full season in the sport. There is a general belief that it is the latter in Adrian Sutil, who performed strongest in 2011. The two seats remaining were held this year by veteran runners Jarno Trulli at HRT and Rubens Barrichello at Williams. Both...

HRT have announced that they are likely to start the 2012 season in worse shape than they were in at the end of 2011. So we're looking at worse than battling, usually in vain, to avoid locking out the back row of the grid. Ouch. The primary reason is that the team are transferring their racing operations from Germany to Spain—part of team owner Thesan Capital's long-term project to make the team "progressively more Spanish." This is a huge upheaval for any team, and more so for a relatively new and inexperienced constructor. The development of the new car will be...

Was Ayrton Senna a greater F1 driver than Michael Schumacher? Or were both of those worthies totally eclipsed by Juan Fangio?Well, the answer has to depend on how greatness is measured, and that is precisely why there is no universal agreement among F1 fans.Usually when attempts have been made to answer the question there has been total reliance placed on race statistics, which is fair enough except it does not factor in that drivers never compete in equal machinery. For the purposes of this article I decided to approach the question of "who is or was the greatest F1 driver" from a "wisdom of the...

Lotus Renault have announced 2011 reserve driver Romain Grosjean will partner Kimi Raikkonen for the 2012 season. The Frenchman was given the race seat after impressing the team in Friday practice for the final two races of the year. Grosjean drove seven races for the Renault team in 2009 season with no success. In 2010, he won the AutoGP series (formerly F3000 Euroseries), and followed this up by becoming the GP2 champion in 2011.In a statement, Grosjean said: There's a big grin on my face at the prospect of getting behind the wheel of next year's car, and I feel very privileged to be given...

With the news that Ferrari were departing from Formula One Teams Association (FOTA), the subject of testing has once again returned to the surface. Ten years ago, the teams which could afford it spent millions on extensive testing schedules, using multiple drivers and even separate teams of mechanics to extract every tenth from their cars. The testing took place as often as possible, before and during the season. But budgets were spiralling upwards, and the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) stepped in to dramatically limit the amount of testing which could be done. ...

The Mexican Grand Prix, last held in 1992, should return to the Formula One calendar in the near future. At least, that's the opinion of one Mexican F1 fan, Carlos Slim Domit. Every fan thinks his or her home country should have a Grand Prix, so normally we might not pay any attention. But Slim Domit is no ordinary fan—he's the son of Carlos Slim Helú, the world's richest man. Carlos Sr.'s net worth is estimated at $74 billion. And the family is already involved in F1, as major backers of Sauber (Telcel, Telmex and Claro are parts of their empire). Sergio Perez...

As what was planned—prior to the "Arab Spring"—to be the longest season in Formula One history draws to a close, driver concerns about the unlimited use of the Drag Reduction System (DRS) in free practice and qualifying have been made public. Not because of the obvious reason—that there's absolutely no point at all in allowing it to be activated during these sessions—but because of the safety issues it causes. Writing for the BBC, key Grand Prix Drivers' Association (GPDA) member Mark Webber highlighted three instances in which pushing too hard to get the full benefit of...

Long ago, Formula One teams raced in their national colours. The Ferraris and Alfa Romeos were Italian red, the BRMs and Vanwalls British racing green, and the Mercedes and Auto Unions German silver. They were teams which carried the hopes of nations, which the population could get behind and easily recognise as one of their own. The sponsorship era mostly ended the custom of cars painted in national colours, and over time the idea of a team the whole country would support faded away with few exceptions. The nationality of the team meant little unless the team entered red cars. Few...

Only days after Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone hinted that there may be trouble with preparations for the 2012 US Grand Prix, work has ground to a halt at the Circuit of The Americas track in Austin, Texas. Ecclestone responded cryptically when quizzed over progress at the circuit,Austin? I wouldn't want to put my money down that that will happen. I hope it will and we are doing our best to make it happen, but I wouldn't want to say yes. The problem is seemingly a simple one to resolve. The contract to hold the US Grand Prix has been made with a promotions company, Full Throttle Productions,...
