Roger Federer’s Blueprint for Wimbledon 2014 Success

It wasn't long ago that betting against Roger Federer to win Wimbledon seemed like lunacy.

After all, this was the man who as a ponytailed, teenage challenger staged a coup and ended Pete Sampras' reign as the king of the All England Club. He won the first of his five consecutive titles on the London lawns in 2003, kicking off a stretch of unprecedented dominance not only at Wimbledon but also in men's tennis history.

In 2008, the balance shifted. Just as he had dethroned Sampras, Federer himself was dethroned at Wimbledon for the first time. Rafael Nadal defeated the five-time defending champion to win his first Wimbledon title and fifth Grand Slam.

He repeated as champion in 2009, outlasting Andy Roddick in a five-set match that again extended well past its limits. Roddick, one of the last remaining holdovers from Federer's stretch of untouchability, tasted disappointment at the Swiss' hands four times at Wimbledon.



In the years since, the rise of Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, coupled with the ever-present force that is Nadal, has seen Federer struggle to recapture major glory. His one title in 17 attempts came at Wimbledon in 2012, where he put on a vintage performance to dispatch Djokovic and Murray in the final two rounds.

Having not tasted major glory since, the questions continue to be asked of one of the game's greatest. He's openly stated his desire to win more Grand Slams, but can he?

He has others convinced. Sampras told reporters: “That's why he's playing, I don't think he's playing for anything else but to win some more majors."

With his four children in tow, Federer will be the No. 4 seed in the men's draw when the first ball is struck on Monday. Stuck on 17 Grand Slam titles since his triumph at this very venue two years ago, it's tough to call Federer an outsider at a major he's won seven times.
