Spieth's start couldn't have been much worse Friday. After he shot a five-over Thursday, his opening drive of the day on No. 1 went out of bounds in the trees, though he limited the damage to just a bogey on the big 560-yard par-five hole.
He came back strong on No. 3 thanks to a solid approach shot that came within a few feet of the hole, as the PGA Tour showed:
It set up his first birdie of the day and gave him some momentum in the early stages of the front nine.
Two holes later, he got his second birdie of the day despite struggling to hit the fairway. His driving accuracy was at 53 percent Friday, and he sent his second shot on No. 5 to the rough.
Spieth was able to work his way out with an approach that put him within 15 feet of the hole, and he was able to sink his next shot.
He got inside the cut line on No. 7 thanks to another hole-out from the fringe, via the PGA Tour:
Spieth hit the fringe again with his first shot on No. 8, which put him more than 54 feet away from the hole, and he paid for it as he two-putted his way to his second bogey of the day. He was having difficulties figuring out the speeds of the greens all day, losing 0.722 strokes with his putter.
He made up for it on No. 9 with another birdie thanks to a huge 318-yard drive that went down the middle of the fairway. His approach put him within six feet of the hole.
After five straight pars to start the back nine, Spieth created some breathing room with a birdie on No. 15. His first shot on the par three put him 34 feet away from the hole on the short rough.
