Just when the talk is all of Roger Federer’s decline, his failure to get beyond the quarters of two Grand Slams, his slip to his lowest ranking in six-and-a-half years—all the way to No. 3—he plays the tactical equivalent of that zippy off-forehand that leaves his opponent rooted to the spot. Just as his fans are gazing adoringly at photos of Roger, Mirka, and assorted family members on a luxury yacht in the Med, and then melting at the photos of the four starfish hands of his twin daughters on their first birthday, he is—metaphorically—planning that between-the-legs...

The sport of professional tennis has increased dramatically in popularity over the years, and I'm not too surprised why. It seems there has been a tennis boom in the number of extremely gorgeous athletes in the sport. I remember as a teen thinking that Chris Evert was pretty, and that she was a rare exception in the game. Now it appears she would be an average face of today's game. So join me in counting down the Top 20 sexy female tennis stars of all time.Begin Slideshow Read More →

With just a few short weeks until the summer and fall hardcourt season, I thought it was time to look forward to the major tournaments that make up the rest of the 2010 tour schedule. The hardcourt season often presents players with one of two major paths. One is to continue with their winning ways, while the other is to recover from disappointing losses and find a way to grind their way back to respectability. Some players come on strong late in the year, while others fade like twilight. The question on everyone's mind is who will win the U.S. Open, but there are plenty of other tournaments...

The women's Bank of the West Classic at Stanford this week is loaded with top players and should be quite a battle. Sam Stosur is the top seed followed by Elena Dementieva, coming off an injury, Agnieszka Radwanska, and Marion Bartoli. My personal favorite player, Maria Sharapova, is making her summer debut this week as well. I always tell myself not to let bias get in the way when making picks, but I have said since the beginning of the year that this is going to be the summer of Maria. I think the summer of Maria begins now. So here are my completely unbiased picks: First quarter Stosur...

It’s an odd time in the tennis year when all the surfaces seem to clash like a salad dressing that won’t emulsify. The clay season, which dominated the calendar from the first week in April through no fewer than 11 ATP events—three of them Masters—towards its conclusion at Roland Garros, has reared its head again. It seems an ungainly and untimely return of the red stuff before the all-too-brief afterglow of the grass has barely faded. Clay’s unseemly intrusion back into the tour was resisted, for one brief week, at the only remaining grass tournament in North American—and...

Throughout Roger Federer's golden period from approximately the end of 2003 to 2007, he somehow repeatedly failed to accomplish a goal that he couldn't have cared less about - being on the cover of Sports Illustrated. In fact, the first time it happened, he had to share it with Nadal as part of the "greatest-match-ever-played" syndrome that followed after the Spaniard's triumph at Wimbledon. It was only when Federer overcame Robin Soderling on the French Clay that SI, seeing a solitary Swiss tear roll down his cheek for all those lost covers, finally took pity on him. The very next week a...

The French/Wimbledon lollapalooza felt like a blur, and for the men, it seemed to decide everything but our next president in the span of about six weeks. If the headlines are to be believed, we now know that Nadal is King and the year-end No. 1, Roger Federer has hit the skids, and the Big Hitters are the new big thing, led by the vanguard of Robin Soderling, Tomas Berdych, and Juan Martin del Potro. However, there are lots of tennis to be played this year, and with the Paris to London French-Wimbledon six-week whirlwind tour over, it's finally time to take a break and look ahead to the hard...

We're already into the summer hard court season, and the coveted U.S. Open trophy is ready to be given to the best woman of the tournament. We have already seen Serena Williams win the Australian Open and Wimbledon, while Francesca Schiavone won at Roland Garros. But those two champions had a tougher time to win their trophies than the U.S. Open winner will have this year. The scheduling has started to take their toll on the players. Think about someone like Caroline Wozniacki, the world No. 3, and how many tournaments she has played so far. She made it to the finals last year, but she is probably...

In a another month we will be heavily invested in the last grand slam tournament of the season, the 2010 U.S Open to be held in Queens, New York, at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Last year's winner of the men's U.S. Open crown, Juan Martin del Potro will not be on hand to defend his championship. He is recovering from wrist surgery, having spent most of 2010 sidelined. The question remains whether Roger Federer will re-establish his dominance in the event or if a new champion will be crowned as the next U.S. Open winner. Some believe Federer's era has past. But most have...

He may not have the physique of Rafael Nadal, or the sex appeal of Fernando Verdasco, but Spaniard Albert Montanes continues to turn heads on the ATP World Tour. Capturing his second title of the season on Sunday, the 29-year-old from Barcelona proved that his success on the second tier of the circuit was no fluke. Defeating Roger Federer in Estoril earlier this year for his fourth career title, Montanes benefited from an ankle injury to Gael Monfils in Stuttgart over the weekend for his career fifth title. Using his deceptively powerful one-handed backhand, Montanes' off the apex hit serve...
