Garcia isn't the only player who has a chance to shoot up the board with a top finish, either.
As the second leg of the FedEx Cup, the Deutsche Bank Championship features a 100-man field. After the tournament is finished and the points are tallied, the field for the third event on the schedule—the BMW Championship in Chicago—is pared down to 70 golfers.
The field is then cut down to just 30 golfers for the Tour Championship.
This format puts an emphasis on golfers who are on or near the cut bubble to finish at or near the top of the leaderboard in every tournament.
These following golfers have put themselves in prime position to make monumental leaps up the FedEx Cup rankings Sunday.
Sergio Garcia
The leader through three rounds, Garcia shot a 64 on Sunday to get to 19-under par for the tournament. As noted by PGA.com, the Spaniard leads Henrik Stenson by two strokes:
Should Garcia come through with a steady performance under pressure and win the tournament, he is projected to move from No. 55 in the FedEx Cup rankings to No. 3.
Through three rounds, Garcia has shot no worse than five-under par, posting rounds of 66, 65 and 66.
Hitting fairways and greens with regularity (over 83 percent in both categories), the most talented player to never win a major has been playing with a high degree of comfort and skill. But, as many of you are surely aware, Garcia has been known to choke under pressure.
