Golf Divided over Decision to Allow Madeira Islands Open to Continue After Death

The Telegraph reports that the Tour's influential players’ committee will meet this month to discuss the decision, with some calling for “a protocol” to be “drawn up in the event of any similar tragedy.”
MacGregor would have celebrated his 53rd birthday on Monday; however, he died on the ninth hole at Madeira while caddying for Scotland’s Alastair Forsyth.
Instead of suspending play, officials decided to carry on with the competition, probably to the delight of many people on fantasymoneyleagues.com.
However, some players have reacted with anger at that decision, taking to Twitter to air their concerns, while others have supported the European Tour. Callum Shinkwin, who was at Madeira, believes it was right to carry on playing.
“It is very sad and the mood around the course was very down. Ultimately though I do feel they made the right decision,” said Shinkwin. “The tournament director said he was a guy who had a real passion for the sport, it can’t have been easy for them to decide continue but I feel they did the right thing.”
Play was initially suspended after McGregor’s death, and a period of silence was held at the putting green at the hilly Santo da Serra course, some 2,000 feet above sea level, where he died. But while some players refused to return to play, others, including Forsyth, carried on.
An anonymous player who spoke to the Telegraph said, “It is quite obvious play would have been abandoned if it had been a player who had died. But because it was a caddie they were unsure to how to react. That is plainly not right.”
