Tiger Woods Press Conference: Ultimately He Had To Face the Public

We knew this day would come at some point. Tiger couldn't return to the PGA Tour without first having to face the public.

On Friday morning at 11am EST Tiger Woods will sit in front of a microphone, in front of a few select media outlets that he invited, and will tell the world what we've long known. Not to mention he'll do so on his terms, not answering a single question.

A statement, released on his official website, reads:

Tiger Woods will be speaking to a small group of friends, colleagues and close associates at 11:00 a.m. EST on Friday at the TPC Sawgrass Clubhouse in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. Tiger plans to discuss his past and his future, and he plans to apologize for his behavior.

While Tiger feels that what happened is fundamentally a matter between him and his wife, he also recognizes that he has hurt and let down a lot of other people who were close to him. He also let down his fans. He wants to begin the process of making amends, and that's what he's going to discuss.

His remarks will be open to a press pool for live coverage. It is NOT a news conference.

But does Tiger really need to make any statement at all? The answer to that question is simple. It's an emphatic, YES. But that yes comes with an asterisk.

If Tiger is out to just save his marriage, a public apology wouldn't be necessary or required of him.

But if his marriage is all but over, the only thing left for Tiger to save is his career on the PGA Tour. Now that would require an apology to the tour and the players that make it what it is today.

As I was listening to the radio, a local sports station here in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, I listened to one of their on-air guys get blasted by listeners for "letting Tiger off the hook."

Here's where my problem with the public comes in. Why are we as a society requiring anything of Tiger? He doesn't owe us a thing. We act so surprise...
