McIlroy made up two strokes on Horschel, firing a third-round 67 to tie him atop the leaderboard at nine under par and set up a final-round showdown for all the marbles.
Horschel struggled mightily on the back nine, bogeying two of the first four holes to open the door for McIlroy, the No. 1 ranked player in the world, to catch him.
An eagle on the par-five 15th hole allowed McIlroy to tie for the top spot on the leaderboard, and both men finished their rounds with a string of pars.
Jim Furyk also played his way into contention on Saturday, matching McIlroy’s round of 67 to head to the clubhouse seven-under and two strokes back of the lead.
With both McIlroy and Horschel entering the week in the top five of the FedEx Cup standings, a win by either man would be enough to capture the championship.
Furyk, who currently sits in seventh position, would need a win and some help.
