US Open Odds 2014: Vegas Projections for Top Stars in This Year’s Field

The U.S. Open is one of the biggest tournaments of the year, and the 2014 edition of the historic major from Pinehurst Resort’s infamous No. 2 course has fans of golf excited to see which player etches his name in the history books.
Another group interested in the U.S. Open is the gamblers. With the odds for the tournament set, bettors now have the chance to make a wager on the player or players they believe will thrive in the second major of the season.
With top names such as defending champion Justin Rose and fan favorite Phil Mickelson ready to challenge for a tournament championship, golf fans are ready for the action starting Thursday at Pinehurst.
Here are the updated odds for the 2014 U.S. Open.
Smartest Bet: Phil Mickelson
There are many players to watch over the course of the U.S. Open, but no one is a safer bet than favorite Phil Mickelson. The American player has never won the second major of the year, but he has come close.
Mickelson has finished second six times (including the 2013 event from Merion). With 10 career top-10 finishes in the tournament, Mickelson has played well during the events, but he hasn’t been able to seal the deal.
When asked about his perception of never winning a U.S. Open before, Mickelson told Doug Ferguson of the Associated Press, via The Denver Post, about his success in the event and his hopes of winning in the future.
"Some people view it as though, 'He's come close and he's never done it,'" Mickelson said. "I see it as though I've finished second six times in this event. I played some of my best golf in this event, and I should have an opportunity—and more than one opportunity—to close one out here in the future."
