2012 Olympic Games: Canada’s Soccer Bronze Glitters Like Gold

Heck, Canadians don't even call it football. We call it soccer because football to us is a game played by rather large, often angry lads in gladiator gear and—even though only two fellows on any one team actually puts foot to ball—it's called football.
Today, however, the beautiful game is wrapped in an embrace that stretches from the Pacific to the Atlantic, and there's a nationwide sing-along of "Thank Heaven for Little Girls."
Like Diana Matheson, a spirited 5-foot-nothing midfielder whose tiny right foot delivered a goal in the 92nd minute of an energy-siphoning match with the French and provided Canada with an Olympic bronze medal that carries the glitter of gold.
A month ago, you would have been hard-pressed to find many hosers outside of Matheson's hometown of Oshawa, ON, who could have named her as a member of the national women's soccer side, but countless households are mentioning her name now.
Along with that of Christine Sinclair. And Erin McLeod. And Melissa Tancredi.
These women initially won the embrace and admiration of a country because we felt they were cheated by a Norwegian referee who in a moment of madness made dubious calls that paved the path to a 4-3 semifinal loss to the powerful United States side.
It didn't matter that the Canadian women had thrice surrendered one-goal advantages to the Americans. Or that keeper McLeod had been warned about delaying tactics prior to referee Christiana Pedersen's ruling that granted the U.S. a free kick, which led to a hand ball call that led to the tying goal that sent the semifinal to extra time.
We was robbed. Period.
So along with Sinclair, Tancredi and other angry fans, we howled in concert.
