Heading into the game, Australia were the only side in the four-team competition without a point to their names.
It wasn’t pretty, with the wet and windy conditions in Perth not helping the players, but a first-half try from Israel Folau helped Australia to eke out the win.
It was a scrappy start, with handling errors breaking up the flow of play.
Nicolas Sanchez handed Argentina an early lead with a penalty, but that was swiftly cancelled out by the boot of Christian Lealiifano.
Australia were guilt of errors, but they got it right on 27 minutes with a Folau try. Some superb handling stretched Argentina, and James O’Connor delivered a rapid, pinpoint pass to Folau.
The winger still had plenty to do, but he has strength to complement his pace and drove over the line to hand Australia a cushion.
Australia extended their advantage on the stroke of half-time when Lealiifano kicked a penalty.
Argentina hauled themselves back into the contest with 15 minutes remaining when Juan Manuel Leguizamon powered over for a try, and the conversion from Sanchez cut the deficit to one point.
There were some nervous moments for Australia in the final 10 minutes, particularly as Lealiifano missed a couple of decent penalty chances, but they were able to soak up the pressure and secure the victory.
After the latest round of games, New Zealand are top with 18 points, with South Africa in second (14), Australia third (four) and Argentina in fourth (two).
In Matchday 5 on Sept. 28, South Africa hosts Australia in Cape Town while Argentina hosts New Zealand in Tolosa.
