Murray beat his Russian opponent in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, while Edmund earlier pulled off one of the best wins of his career by knocking out No. 7 seed Roberto Bautista Agut.
Edmund, who came through qualifying to reach the main event, triumphed in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
David Ferrer and Angelique Kerber were among the other victors in China.
Ferrer, the No. 5 seed in Beijing, saw off the challenge of Fabio Fognini in two sets, winning 6-3, 6-4.
In the women's draw, world No. 1 Kerber eventually saw off Barbora Strycova 6-3, 7-6(4) to book her spot in the third round.
Recaps Kuznetsov was no match for a superb Murray, who wrapped up a quickfire victory in just one hour and 17 minutes.
Despite Murray dropping his serve in the opening game of the match, the world No. 2 was relentless from then on.
After taking the first set, the Scot needed a meagre 29 minutes to end Kuznetsov's misery and set up the tie with his Davis Cup team-mate.
Ferrer also progressed to the quarter-finals with relative ease against Fognini.
The Italian, ranked No. 43 in the world, struggled on serve in the opening set, as Ferrer proved too solid. Fognini didn't fare much better in the second set and ended the match with eight double-faults as the Spaniard marched on.
Meanwhile, Kerber ground out a straight-sets victory over Strycova in one hour and 35 minutes.
The US Open champion broke to go 4-2 up in the first set, and despite losing her own serve immediately after, she clinched the opener.
