With the end of the 2013 tennis season approaching for both the ATP and the WTA, many of the household names are resting up to finish the year strong in higher-profile tournaments in the coming weeks.
However, there are players with plenty of incentive to take to the hard courts of Moscow and compete now, most notably men's No. 1 seed Richard Gasquet, who is trying to get himself into the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals.
Gasquet is No. 10 in the ATP singles rankings, needing to get into the top eight in order to qualify for the marquee year-end event in London.
Meanwhile, Russian native Maria Kirilenko took over the top of the women's draw after Angelique Kerber withdrew, per TennisWorldUSA.org.
Kerber opted to focus on the WTA championships and rest an abdominal strain after capturing a singles title on Sunday in Linz, Austria, according to UPI.com.
That makes Kirilenko even more of a headliner as a local, and puts the 26-year-old in prime position to win her second title of the season despite being ranked lower than top women's seed Roberta Vinci.
