Stan Wawrinka Injury: Updates on Tennis Star’s Back and Return

The two-time Grand Slam winner had been suffering from a back problem since his semi-final appearance in the Rogers Cup in Toronto last month and has since decided to pull out of the event.
The 31-year-old's decision is a further blow to his country, Switzerland, after Roger Federer announced his knee concerns were too severe to allow him to play in South America, per Leo Schlink of the Herald Sun.
Per Sky Sports News HQ, Wawrinka released a statement saying: "I am very sad because after Beijing and London, I would have liked to experience my third Olympic Games in Brazil; unfortunately that will now not be possible."
The move to not take part in the 31st edition of the Summer Olympics means Wawrinka has become the fifth top-10-ranked player to remove himself from action.
Federer, Tomas Berdych, Milos Raonic and Dominic Thiem have already confirmed they will play no part in the global competition for varying reasons.
Freelance journalist Carole Bouchard provided Wawrinka's statement:
The 2014 Australian Open winner was beaten by eventual champion Andy Murray in the first round during the 2012 Games, as the Briton comfortably secured victory, 6-3, 6-3, on home soil.
Wawrinka's withdrawal comes as another blow to the Rio Games, with ongoing problems away from sporting action continuing to shroud the competition.
Tennis View Magazine writer Michael S-J rued Wawrinka's omission:
Per Chiara Palazzo of the Daily Telegraph, world No. 1 golfer Jason Day pulled out of the competition at the end of June, joining a growing list of the world's top sportsmen and women who will not feature in South America.
