At least that's what they said.
When Toro Rosso's patience finally ran out with the disappointing performances of four-time Champ Car champion, Sebastien Bourdais, Red Bull's sister team made history.
And they were about to receive a lot of criticism for their record-breaking.
Already holders of the winning constructor of the youngest ever winner in Formula One, Sebastian Vettel, Toro Rosso ousted Bourdais in favour of a man who would become Formula One's youngest ever driver.
In a season where no mid-season testing was allowed, the majority of Formula One followers found the decision surprising and a few even thought it dangerous.
Jaime Alguersuari, the Spanish teenager coming in from the unknown world of Formula Renault 3.5, was the centre of the attention as the criticism flew across the paddock.
It looks as if Toro Rosso's dangerous decision could well pay off for them.
Alguersuari drove through the second half of 2009 with no expectation and without pulling up any trees, barring one mistake in Japan (where he was actually running well prior to the incident) stayed out of trouble.
He certainly fared better than Nelson Piquet's replacement, Romain Grosjean, at Renault.
After some deliberation, it was confirmed that the 19-year-old Spaniard would stay at Toro Rosso for 2010.
And after his best drive so far in the sweltering humidity of Malaysia, Alguersuari is surely now firmly on the Formula One radar.
No longer is he making up the numbers.
His first Formula One points came as no fluke either.
Yes, there were retirements. But we saw the Toro Rosso driver jump his slightly more experienced teammate Sebastien Buemi at the start, before putting two wonderful moves on fellow rookies Vitaly Petrov and Nico Hulkenberg.
