2010 British Open: Tee Time at The Open Championship at St. Andrews

St. Andrews is one of my favorite venues and The Open is one of my favorite sporting events. I've always been drawn to history and tradition, and the Old Course is by far the most recognizable course in Europe. It's not a long course and scores should be low barring horrible weather. It has perhaps the most famous hole in the world—the "Road Hole," #17—about which Raleigh native Scott Hoch famously said,
"I think it's an awful hole, and it goes against the rules of golf. Where else do you not get to drop off a paved road? I'm not one who believes that just because it's tradition makes it right. If it applies everywhere else in the world, it should apply there."
Scott also called the course a "cow pasture."
Despite Hoch's hatred of the famous course, The Open is always special when it's played there. It's where Jack sunk the last putt of his illustrious Open career, where Tiger won his first Open, where fan favorite John Daly beat Constantino Rocca on a magical, gut-wrenching Sunday, and of course it's known as the birthplace of golf.
As far as the Open in general, who could ever forget Jean Van de Velde's epic collapse. I remember exactly where I was that day, I even remember the weather. It was one of those moments that gets burned into one's memory. It was just captivating to watch the man fall apart in front of millions of people.
I'll never forget watching one of my childhood favorites, Greg Norman, almost pull off an incredible major victory at age 50. My son was born early Friday morning of that weekend, so we were basically stuck in the hospital until Sunday afternoon. Not a bad weekend for me.
