2010 U.S. Open Golf: The Emergence of the Englishman Lee Westwood

The 2010 US Open begins tomorrow, which is always an exciting and eventful major. This year’s tournament is back in Pebble Beach, for the first time since 2000. That is the year where Tiger Woods truly proved to the world how dominant he would be for the next decade. This year's tournament will garner a much different result, as there is no way Woods can deliver that stellar type of play at this given moment.
This year’s tournament will be especially interesting, as there are at least ten players who have the ability to deliver a victory. Phil Mickelson has been playing brilliant golf as of late and should continue to compete at a very high level. Mickelson has gone through loads of heartbreak and grief while on the course, but he still manages to finish near the top on a consistent basis. If he plays to his abilities, there is no reason why Phil can’t win this year's tournament.
Mickelson is obviously a popular choice to win and the renewed rivalry between him and Tiger Woods will obviously be fun to watch. What will catch my attention most will be the emergence of Rory Mcllroy. He is coming off his first PGA Tour win in early May and has had some success on the big stage in the past. Mcllroy is very young and his chances of winning the tournament remain slim, but I look for him to rise to the occasion and deliver four solid rounds of play. It’s always entertaining to watch a 21 year old kid play with the big boys in the one of the most important tournaments of the year.
My pick to win the 2010 US Open is the Englishman, Lee Westwood. He has finished near the top at two of the last three US Open tournaments and will once again be a late round contender when it is all said and done.
