British Open 2011: Odds, Predictions and Favorites at Royal St George

After a historic performance at the US Open, Rory McIlroy is seeking his second major win at this weekend's British Open. McIlroy is heralded as the "next Tiger Woods" and is soaring up the world rankings.

Woods, on the other hand, will continue to be a non-factor. He's withdrawn from yet another major due to a knee injury. As his career fails to get out of squalor, McIlroy's is taking off.

Jack Nicklaus' record is a long way off, but people are beginning to speculate that it may be McIlroy, not Woods, who will break Nicklaus' major record. To say everyone has gotten ahead of themselves with crowning McIlroy the future king of golf is an understatement.

He will have his shot to contribute to the hype by tacking on another major victory, beginning on July 13th at the Open.

To do so, he's going to have to beat out the field, which includes three players who are ranked higher than him in the world golf rankings.

Luke Donald, Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer are set on proving that they are worthy of possessing the top three spots on the list.

There are a lot of heavy hitters involved in the tournament who are also seeking their first major win. There are also aging veterans looking to add to their legacies with another major win.

Tradition at the British Open is unparalleled. It's a great opportunity for a young player to make a name for himself.

Amateurs like Patrick Cantlay don't need a major win to prove their worth. Just doing well in the tournament, as Cantlay did in the US Open, earns him the respect of the golf community.
