Dustin Johnson and Bubba Watson: Are U.S. Golfers Really That Stupid?

One guy was whalin' and flailin' at the ball. The other was in such a hurry he didn't realize he was in a bunker and grounded his club. Both had a very, very real chance to win he PGA Championship. Both are Americans.
Meanwhile, a methodical, poised young German player with a five-win pedigree named Martin Kaymer swept away with the gigantic trophy and even larger win: his first, but probably not his last, Major.
Kaymer should be congratulated for his steady play and for his good choices especially when you look at who played against on the last play-off hole.
That would be the aptly named Bubba Watson who, for some unbelievable reason, decided to whack his ball as far as he could—which turned out to be not so far—but very wet. Meanwhile, Kaymer simply knocked his second shot up a few yards then laid it perfectly onto the green while Bubba had to play with one big stroke against him.
There was no way Kaymer was going to mishit or misstep.
Much worse, perhaps, and quite sadly, Johnson, who most assuredly will win some Majors via his monumental length off the tee and his excellent all-around game, made a classic boo-boo by not realizing he was in a trap. His grounding of the club cost him two strokes and literally grounded his run at the championship.
On the 18th tee, as Kaymer prepared to make the winning putt, Watson's caddy was congratulating his upstart pro, but I had to think, what the heck is he congratulating him for, second place? While in most circumstances that may be great, you can't be happy with your pro when he opts to go for the green in a fit of youthful masculinity when all he had to do was play match-play golf and go to the next tee and try to win it.
The European in this case looked better, calmer and more well-suited to be the winner and let's hope that is not foreshadowing for the upcoming Ryder Cup.
