Gainey and Wagner on Fire
The 37-year-old Gainey had eight birdies and no bogeys on the day. His birdies were like animals at Noah's Ark, as they came in pairs. He gained a stroke on the course on the first two holes, eighth and ninth, 10th and 11th and 16th and 17th.
Here, Gainey missed an opportunity to make his great performance even better. He settles for par on the 12th hole after squandering a birdie putt.
Sustaining this level of play is almost impossible, but a great round like this almost ensures Gainey will at least remain in striking distance through the weekend.
Perhaps Wagner should go without his famous mustache more often. Short of his signature whiskers, the 33-year-old kept pace with Gainey.
Wagner's bogey-free day featured seven birdies and an eagle on the 12th hole. Gainey's misstep on the same hole is the biggest reason the two are tied atop the leaderboard.
Others Who Played Well
Webb Simpson
Most of the time, an opening-round six-under 64 is going to be good enough to land a player in the lead, but not on Thursday. Simpson was rock solid, but thanks to Gainey and Wagner's brilliance, Simpson is two shots behind.
Considering he's the most accomplished of the players in the top four spots, he has a good shot of staying in the hunt and possibly winning the tournament.
