Sleeping on his first experience atop a PGA Tour leaderboard, the prodigious 23-year-old Guthrie managed to stay on top with a one-over-par round of 71, which Thompson bested by one stroke.
Guthrie is a powerful player whose length was stymied somewhat by the blustery conditions that characterized this Saturday in Palm Beach Gardens.
It certainly wasn't an easy venue to face pressure of this magnitude, and the Tour rookie encountered some turbulence in the first six holes of his round.
After notching a birdie at No. 3 to bounce back from a prior bogey, Guthrie missed a very short birdie putt at the par-three fifth. On the next hole, Thompson holed out for birdie from the bunker, while Guthrie had to settle for bogey.
But as the round progressed, it was clear that Guthrie wasn't going to give any ground. A miss inside three feet at No. 10 was followed by eight consecutive rock-solid pars to close.
Although he mostly struggled again with his long game, Thompson pounded a fairway metal onto the final green to set up an opportunity for eagle. However, he could not quite capitalize, leaving his ball about two revolutions short, right in the heart.
This tournament is far from over, though. 18 long holes remain for two leaders who have never won on the PGA Tour. World No. 9 Lee Westwood is just two strokes back after a round of 70, and the same is the case with Geoff Ogilvy.
The 2006 U.S. Open champion hasn't won on this circuit in four years, and as the PGA TOUR Media's official Twitter page hints, perhaps he should consider playing the Honda Classic a bit more often.
