Masters 2011: Charl Schwartzel Was the Last Man Standing at Augusta

Saturday at Augusta is usually called “moving day,” as there’s significant movement up and down the leaderboard.

Well, it was fashionably late to the party, as seven players held at least a share of the lead at some point on Sunday afternoon.

However, when the dust settled, South African Charl Schwartzel won the 75th Masters.

Never had a champion birdied the last four holes at Augusta.

Schwartzel hit 16 greens in total on the day. He used the combination of a near-perfect short game and timely putting to win the championship.

Coincidentally, it was 50 years to the day that fellow South African, Gary Player, became the first international player to ever win at the Masters.

It was refreshing to see enthusiasm back on the course. It seemed like each player fed off one another. The young guns, Rory McIlroy and Jason Day, passed the mental test of competing at a major championship.

No longer can they sneak up on the competition, as they should be playing in the final group for many Sundays to come. It will be fun to watch their maturity over the next decade.

The fans, of course, still react to everything Tiger.

The crowds were growing behind him with every successful shot—the gallery was even once again yelling “it’s in the hole!” after each tee shot.

Woods easily wiped out a seven-stroke deficit before even reaching the back nine by converting four birdies and a 10-foot eagle.

Tiger had all of his familiar mannerisms going on Sunday—the fist pump, the glazed stare as he walked to the next tee and fixing his eyes on the target before each shot.

While Woods didn’t gain a victory this weekend, he alerted everyone that one will be on the way soon.

That should make it an interesting summer for everyone on the tour.
