PGA Golf: The Players Championship a True Made-for-Television Event

The Pete Dye designed course is both a golfer’s dream as well as a nightmare at the same time. The layout is long 7,215 yards but fair.The signature hole is the famed “Island Green” par-3 17th at TPC Sawgrass.
The course itself is as much a star as the golfers that play it. Like Augusta National and Pebble Beach this is a place on every golfers "bucket list." Clearly it is a natural for television and the casual fan enjoys watching this tournament because of the many challenges that it presents.
So the big names are out in force with Rory McIlroy as the favorite but the field includes Lee Westwood Luke Donald, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. This glamour field will get plenty of coverage starting Thursday through Sunday on the Golf Channel as well as NBC.
Tom Roy, NBC senior golf producer has crafted some cool things around the famed "Island Green." He has a camera that is manned sitting out just above the water to get all the shots on the green. They also have a camera that is remote and is in the water off the 17th green, again to capture all the shot's from every angle.
According a press release received today by Bleacher Report from NBC they plan total coverage of every hole of the tournament and then some.
Golf Channel and NBC will combine to present 22 hours of live tournament coverage Thursday-Sunday, with limited commercial interruption from TPC Sawgrass.
