After the third round on Saturday, Garcia went after Woods for pulling a club out of his bag when the Spaniard was just about to hit the ball on the second hole. He felt the crowd's reaction affected his shot.
Flash forward to Sunday on the 17th hole, when Garcia hit the water on two consecutive shots to eventually end with a quadruple bogey on the hole. After a double bogey on the 18th, Garcia had plummeted from first place to a tie for eighth.
ESPN sports business reporter Darren Rovell noted that Garcia's meltdown on the final two holes cost him a cool $800,000.
Garcia is no stranger to meltdowns, of course. After scoring a 75 in the third round of the Masters last year, he infamously said he simply didn't have what it takes to ever win a major.
The 33-year-old has 18 top-10 finishes in majors but has yet to win one. Perhaps what was most frustrating Sunday for the Spaniard was the fact that he has had some success at the Players Championship before, winning in 2008.
But it was not to be this year, as the fiery veteran made quite a lot of noise without, well, making a lot of noise in the end. It's becoming increasingly difficult to ignore his inability to keep leads in tournaments, usually falling flat before it is all said and done.
