Walker Cup 2013 Results: GB and Ireland Take Upper Hand in Early Sunday Action

Thanks to six-and-a-half U.S. singles victories on the first afternoon of play, the U.S. took a giant step toward reclaiming the Walker Cup.
On Sunday, this year’s hosts teed off with an 8-4 lead in the series, but that can all change in the matter of just a few key performances.
The visitors have done well in this morning’s pairs and appear to have been displeased by the manner with which the U.S. dominated on Saturday.
So impressive has their initiative been, in fact, that three of the four U.S. duos failed to go into the lead even once over their front nine endeavours.
Instead, the pairings of Bobby Wyatt and Cory Whitsett, Michael Weaver and Todd White and Max Homa and Michael Kim, had to settle for simply tying matters up when possible.
The six Americans have just managed a combined five birdies and one eagle over the first 27 holes, giving the British and Irish contenders a route back into the competition.
However, one couple has managed to build on the momentum established yesterday. Patrick Rodgers and Jordan Niebrugge went as far as four up at one stage of their first nine holes against Gavin Moynihan and Kevin Phelan.
The all-Irish pair have struggled to get into matters, just as they did on Saturday, with Rodgers once again helping in their demise.
That being said, Moynihan was the only one to salvage some pride for Great Britain and Ireland in the singles on Saturday, as Alabama Athletics can attest:
It was the afternoon session that ultimately proved to be Great Britain and Ireland’s undoing in the amateur tournament yesterday and could do so once more.
