With three birdies and no bogeys through his first 12 holes, he's playing the mistake-free golf that can make him a threat on any course.
Despite winning the Waste Management Phoenix Open in February and tying for third at the WGC-Cadillac Championship in March, it has been a tough year for Lefty.
He missed the cut at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and hasn't managed a finish better than 16th. Heading into The Players Championship on May 9, Mickelson needs to establish momentum.
He is one to watch this week.
Boo Weekley
Were it not for one subpar day during the Zurich Classic of New Orleans last week, Weekley could be going for his second-straight tournament win.
Despite shooting 11 under par through the first two rounds, a one-over 73 on Saturday threw him off the pace. He ultimately finished tied for sixth.
Weekley is off to another good start in Charlotte.
Through 16 holes he was tied for the lead at four-under. Right now, there is no one on tour playing better.
He's poised to be a factor into the weekend.
Rickie Fowler
As the defending champion, Fowler will grab a good share of the attention this week.
After chugging along nicely through his first 11 holes, Fowler hit a snag with his first bogey of the day. Through 14 holes he's still one under par, but he'll need to step up his game to be a contender this week.
Fowler has had four top-10 finishes this season, but he's yet to capture a victory. We will have to see if he can produce the one great round that vaults him to the head of the leaderboard.
