The absence of Tiger Woods from the field may turn a lot of casual fans away, but those who were involved in last year's stunning three-way playoff create plenty of intrigue by themselves. And that's not even including the fact that this indeed will be a world-class showcase of golf across the board.
Rickie Fowler notched his maiden Tour victory here in 2012. The defending champion got by in the aforementioned playoff against fellow prodigy Rory McIlroy and D.A. Points, who was seeking his second win on Tour at the time.
Never afraid to fire at any pin, the flashy Fowler capitalized on a conservative approach by McIlroy in attacking with his approach, stuffing it close and then ramming it in the heart of the hole for the win.
McIlroy had his first win at Quail Hollow back in 2010, shooting a scintillating final-round 62 to set the course record and cap off an improbable comeback after making the 36-hole cut on the number.
Could this be the tournament that finally gets McIlroy back into the winning groove?
Then there's Points. That close call last year had to at least somewhat harden him, because he faced a 12-foot putt for par at the Shell Houston Open for his second Tour triumph. No playoff this time—Points drained it, officially getting back into form after missing nine of the first 11 cuts in 2013.
At the Zurich Classic last week, Points put pressure on young American Billy Horschel, forcing him to make a 26-footer on the final hole to avoid extra holes. Horschel nailed the bomb and won his first Tour event, but Points has been on point and should be ready to get back at it in Charlotte.
