2010 FIFA World Cup: South Korea Dismantles Greece’s Defense To Win 2-0

Despite going into the game as underdogs, South Korea defeated Greece today by a score of 2-0 in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

The scoring opened in the seventh minute, when Lee Jung-Soo knocked in a close range shot off of a corner kick-like set piece.

Of course, lapses by Greece allowed both the set piece and the goal. However, you still can't take anything away from the Korean side and the early pressure they applied to the Greeks' defense.

For most of the rest of the match, South Korea maintained control, producing scoring opportunity after scoring opportunity, and making Greece's renowned defense look silly.

However, it wasn't until the 52nd minute that South Korea would score their second goal, firmly putting the game out of reach.

Thanks to another defensive mistake by Greece, Korean captain and Manchester United regular Park Ji-Sung kept the ball all to himself, making a difficult goal look easy and putting the Korean side ahead 2-0.

It was Greece's defense that many thought would be one of the decisive factors in the game, and it certainly was. Ironically though, it was the ease with which the Koreans dismantled the Greek defense that led to the final 2-0 outcome.

It wasn't until the final 20 minutes that Greece finally showed signs of life. However, it was too little too late, as Korea withstood the attack and managed to keep Greece scoreless in World Cup play.

Despite not scoring a goal, Korean forward Park Chu-Young played a huge role in the win, just as I predicted he would in my match preview.

The young forward kept Greece's defense on its toes and was one of the biggest reasons that the Red Devils were able to tally three points against the 2004 European Champions.

Coming up next for the Koreans is a tough match against Argentina on Thursday in Johannesburg.

While the Koreans will be trying to achieve at least a tie again...
