England: Roy Hodgson Is "The Stand-out Candidate" for the Three Lions Role

The former Liverpool boss has penned a four-year deal and will now start planning for the European Championships, which is only six weeks away.
FA chairman David Bernstein hailed Hodgson as “the stand-out candidate” before going on to say, "We met at Wembley on Monday and quickly decided Roy was the right man to guide us through the European Championship. The board was unanimous in choosing Roy. It's the first time the FA has appointed an English manager with international experience."
In four weeks' time, the new man will name his 23-man squad for the European Championships before warming up against Norway and Belgium ahead of the campaign in Poland and the Ukraine.
Speaking at his unveiling at Wembley, the 64-year-old said, “It is a very proud day for me and I'm a very happy man to be offered to task of managing my country. I hope that everybody will get behind the team as it is the team that counts.
“It is the most important job in English football and a privilege to take the job. Let's hope we can get everybody behind us and make certain that we work as a team and help the team get the results everyone in England expects and wants.”
Hodgson will combine his role as West Brom boss with his new position until the Premier League campaign comes to an end and leaves with the Baggies’ blessing. Chairman Jeremy Peace said, "We did not want Roy to leave and he will be a tough act to follow. But we understand Roy's desire to take the England job and he will leave us after the Arsenal game on 13 May with our best wishes.
