Euro 2012 Qualifiers: Top Teams in Qualifying So Far

It seems just a while ago that we were done with the World Cup, but European sides have been back in action, battling it out in the Euro 2012 qualifiers.
We are only two games into the qualifying stages(for most teams) so it would be difficult to make assertions, or indeed rule any team out of contention just yet. The great beauty of European qualifiers is their unpredictability. One look at the groups would show that there are almost always two strong teams per group, with the rest lagging behind, and you would think what the point of these qualifiers was, given that one would expect those two teams per group to steamroll the others.
In effect, it could hardly be different. Yes, the top two sides in each group do eventually make it through, but they have to work hard most of the times to get results(discounting teams like San Marino and Faroe Islands). Remember that Latvia qualified for Euro 2004 ahead of at least two other strong contenders in their group. Russia beat England to a place in Euro 2008. Scotland almost made it to the same tournament.
In a way, qualifiers test a national team’s strength of character even more than the big tournaments, because in qualifiers you have players assembling together from their clubs about once every month, playing once, then again going back to their clubs, and the cycle continues, so it difficult to have any continuity.
Anyhow, here we take a look at some of the best teams in Euro 2012 qualifying so far(It has already thrown up some surprises. Look at Portugal’s position in their group).
