When Xavi plays, he makes simple and short passes to his teammates and breaks the opponent’s defense by frustrating them. He often sits deep and waits for the opponent to make the error. Cesc, on the other hand, tried to drive through the centre of the pitch and get the final ball to the striker (Villa, David Silva, and Llorente in this match) himself, in fact the role he plays for Arsenal these days.
Xavi is hard to be replaced, yes, but his significant quality was his patience. Cesc didn’t have that in the match. Maybe he was going to make the most use of his rare chance to start the match or tried to impress del Bosque, but apparently it didn’t work. However, I must admit that it’s wrong to gain a conclusion about a player by just watching a single match. But the match clearly showed the difference between Xavi and Cesc.
It’s important to understand Cesc’s role before we come to any decisions. At Arsenal, which employ 4-3-3 and 4-2-1-3, he plays as the most advanced midfielder. In 4-3-3 he plays slightly ahead of Nasri and in 4-2-1-3, he plays as the linking man between defensive midfield and offence.
So what is Xavi’s role? In Barca’s 4-3-3, he plays along with Keita sometimes or behind Iniesta when Iniesta joins the midfield. In 4-2-4, he plays alongside Busquets, sitting very deep.
Cesc started his career at Arsenal as a replacement to Vieira, who is a box-to-box midfielder. Cesc was playing deep at that time, unlike in recent years. If Cesc wants to get into the national team, the only way is as the natural replacement for Xavi. He neither has the...
