2010 French Open Finals: Rafael Nadal Seeks Revenge Against Robin Soderling

You couldn't write a better script. Okay, so maybe Nadal/Federer has more of a classic ring to it, but competitively speaking there is no longer a lot of mystery in a Federer-Nadal French Open showdown.

But throw in a pinch of animosity, a dash of revenge, and a No. 1 ranking just ripe for the picking, and we have ourselves quite a bubbling cauldron.

Robin Soderling, a career underachiever and alleged locker room outcast, was shrouded in virtual anonymity until about 12 months ago when he put together the match of his life to dismiss four-time defending French Open Champion Rafael Nadal.

No one saw it coming, least of all Nadal. To his credit Soderling seized his opportunity and hit his way all the way to the final before finally losing to Roger Federer.

Fastforward a year later and Soderling is back in the Final, having dispatched his conqueror of a year ago in the quarterfinals, and looking to once again dash Nadal's dreams of a fifth title in Paris.

 

Why Soderling Can Win

Soderling plays a very unique clay court style. He doesn't follow the traditional rules of clay court tennis. He's not a great mover, doesn't have a a great deal of feel around the net, and he doesn't play patiently.

Fortunately for the Swede, he can hit a tennis ball about as big as anyone in the world. He can serve in the neighborhood of 140 mph. Most importantly, he strategically capitalizes on any opportunity to step into the court and smack winners.

Traditionally we call this a hard court game. But, Soderling has figured out a way to make his style work on the clay. When looking at his strokes, notice that they are very clean, very accurate. He has long swings that take time to produce, but when set he is capable of overwhelming anyone on any surface. Just ask Roger Federer.
