Fourth seeded Mikhail Youzhny crashed out of the first round of the Qatar Open on Monday, losing in straight sets to Sergiy Stakhovsky 7-6 (11), 6-2.
After a tight first set by both competitors, Youzhny's usually reliable backhand began to misfire, causing the 2003 semifinalist to fade quickly.
Finishing 2009 with strong performances during the indoor season, Youzhny's first loss of the year was a substantial upset.
Stakhovsky, who owns two career ATP World Tour titles, will next face either LukaszKubot or local wild card Karim Maamoun in round two.
Elsewhere, No. 5 seed Viktor Troicki began his 2010 season in style, defeating Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-1, 7-5.
The Serbian (No. 29 in the world) will face Oliver Rochus, who dismantled Abdulla Hajji 6-1, 6-0 in 38 minutes.
Swiss player Marco Chiudinelli continued his rise up the rankings, disposing of Paolo Lorenzi 7-5, 6-3.
Chiudinelli improved his ranking from No. 603 at the start of last year to his current position of No. 56.
Chiudinelli will next face No. 3 seed Nikolay Davydenko or a qualifier in round two.
Russian powerful hitter Evgeny Korolev also made the second round on day one action, easing his way past Martin Vassallo Arguello 6-2, 6-3.
Matches that are still to come on Monday will include No. 6 seed Albert Montanes vs. Ernests Gulbis, Frederico Gil vs. Potito Starace, and No. 7 seed Ivo Karlovic vs. FabioFognini.

Top seed Andy Roddick made a successful return to the courts on Monday, defeating Australian hopeful Peter Luczak 7-6 (5), 6-2.
Roddick's serve was simply too good during the one hour, 24 minute victory, striking 15 aces and winning 86 percent of his first serve points.
