With top seed Caroline Wozniacki having been bounced from the competition on Thursday, Agnieszka Radwanska had the pressure of being the highest remaining seed as she looked to punch her ticket to the semifinals. She didn't have an easy challenge waiting for her, with Angelique Kerber, the tournament's finalist last season, waiting for her.
Here's a look at Friday's full results and some of the day's most notable matches along with Saturday's upcoming schedule.
Varvara Lepchenko, who defeated Wozniacki in the second round, moved on to the semifinals on Friday night after defeating Mona Barthel in three sets, 6-7, 6-2, 6-3.
Lepchenko was masterful on break-point opportunities, winning seven of 11 during her return play and 10 of 14 while serving.
It seems her recent training has been putting her over the top, as WTA Insider points out:
She is on to face Karolina Pliskova, who defeated Ajla Tomljanovic in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
Despite facing match point in the second set, Elina Svitolina was able to claw her way back and ultimately defeat Alison Riske, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1.
Per WTATennis.com, Svitolina said:
She was playing well. She wasn't making many unforced errors. I was trying to push myself to stick to the baseline. That was the most important part for me to turn the match around. Once I started playing more on the baseline and not getting pushed behind it, it worked better for me.
By virtue of her win over Riske, Svitolina will square off against Kerber, who took down the tournament's No. 2-ranked Radwanska to clinch a berth in the semifinals.
