Creating a Fairer ATP Season for Nadal, Federer and Everyone Else

Over the recent years, there have been many player complaints about the lengthy ATP season, spearheaded by Rafael Nadal and, to a lesser extent, Roger Federer. Taking this in mind, I have created an ATP season that I believe is relatively reasonable for those top players and for those lower ranked ones, and those dying breed of surface specialists.

I would start the year with Chennai, Doha and the Heineken Open; these 250 events would allow the men to work back into their groove after the offseason. I would then move up all the other 250 and 500 tournaments such as Rotterdam and Acapulco, and end this season with Indian Wells and Miami.

The infamously scorching Australian Open, along with Sydney and Brisbane etc., will be moved into late March, during the relatively cool Australian holiday season. The clay court season will not be changed and will end with Roland Garros.

Now this is where it all changes. I would have Halle as a grass court Masters, then the UNICEF Open as a 250 event, then Queens as another masters and the UNICEF Open just before Wimbledon. That’s right; I’m proposing for the creation of two grass Masters Series, each set in two different weeks with roughly half a week in between.

Surprised? Well, with one of the last serve and volleyers of the tour, and my personal favourite player, Taylor Dent retiring, I thought it was time for the tour to create a haven for those who prefer to serve and volley, in the same way that the clay court masters are a safe haven for those who prefer to slug it from the baseline.

I acknowledge, though, that there are fewer serve and volleyers, and as such, there are only two grass court masters. The grass court season, excluding Wimbledon, would become a period of four weeks from the current two.

Following Wimbledon, I would have a shortened US Open Series by removing a few 250 tournaments and replace them with Toronto as a 500 tournament. &n...
