David Ferrer: Of Sombreros, Tangos and the Unconventional Llanero

There seems to be nothing remarkable about him at first glance. He doesn't have a commanding stature, nor does he have a rippling musculature that his other contemporaries seem to possess. And when he walks, he doesn't have the "shoulders held high" look that—again—his other contemporaries have. In the words of a cruel stepmother, the man could very well be The Other Spaniard.

But David Ferrer is not The Other Spaniard, no more than tennis is an evil and cruel stepmother. He is an entity in his own right; a person who has carved his niche in tennisdom just by the sheer dint of perseverance. This tenacity of his is quite evident, especially when he plays—running his opponents ragged, agilely belting back point after point before finishing things in the subtlest of manners possible. It's also this sheer tenacity of his that has helped him stay in the top 10 of the men's tour when others have been losing form—and their self-confidence—for all the wrong reasons.

Granted that he is not tall, granted that he doesn't have Grand Slam titles under the proverbial belt, but fact remains that Ferrer is not an easy opponent to take lightly. He is regarded to be one of the best returners of serve, and there are no times when he is taken lightly or shrugged off as someone who isn't a serious contender to win tournaments.

However, even as such positives emerge from this Spaniard, one can’t help but wonder about the demoralising statistic about his performance at majors. The thought creeps up unaware, especially in the light of his third title at Acapulco coming in as many years. In the corniest of contexts, Ferrer seems to be lying somewhere in the hypothetical hyphen that demarcates "extra’" and "ordinary."

If one were to customise tennis as per comic books’ specifications, Ferrer looks like the perfect recipe for a sidekick. Taking care of things, being there when things come to a head...
