David Nalbandian’s Summer Road Trip: How Far Can He Go?

Tennis pro David Nalbandian could very well have the greatest talent on tour today but his drive has never taken him to the top of the game where many feel he belongs.
His excellence comes in spurts when the Argentine finds the requisite motivation to achieve. However, he is easily distracted from tennis, feeling compelled to excel consistently only when Davis Cup competition calls him out.
When Nalbandian emerged early in his career, his game was fairly well perfected. He won early and enjoyed success. Playing the game was easy for him, and he knew how to win. He never had to work as hard or practice as diligently as many on tour, which was a blessing early on but may prove to be a detriment at this late stage in his career.
At 28 years old, Nalbandian his playing days are numbered.
The beginning came as the 21st Century turned over. Turning pro in 2000, Nalbandian quickly found himself ranked in the top 50 by 2001. To date, the Argentine has won 11 titles and has been ranked as high as world No. 3 in 2006.
Recently Nalbandian has been trying to return to the ATP tour since he announced in May of 2009 that he was going to have hip surgery and would be unable to compete until the Australian Open in 2010.
Because of an additional abdominal injury, however, Nalbandian could not compete down under and he withdrew from the 2010 Australian Open.
The Argentine attempted to return at his home town tournament, the 2010 Copa Telmex, in February but could not finish because a right thigh injury forced him to retire in the quarterfinals. Even though injured, Nalbandian competed in the Davis Cup and helped Argentina reach the quarterfinals.
